An American woman in Zimbabwe has been jailed on suspicion of trying to overthrow the country's government by allegedly insulting President Robert Mugabe.
Martha O'Donovan, aged 25, was arrested on Friday in her home near the capital city, Harare, and was taken into custody on a charge of insulting and undermining president and trying to overthrow an elected government.
The police alleged that O'Donovan had on October 11 tweeted that President Mugabe, who is now 93, is a "very selfish and sick man" and claimed that he was surviving on a catheter.
According to the police, the anonymous Twitter account @matigary, was taced to her through its IP address. On Saturday, O'Donovan was held in custody after a brief court hearing and she must now wait until November 15 to return to court after lawyers say they will appeal for her to be granted bail at the High Court on Monday.
However the Twitter account that was allegedly traced to Martha who is from Martinsville, New Jersey,and a graduate of NYU, has been in Zimbabwe for the last year and working for a local TV network Magaba and bartending, was still active while she is in jail, the police said.
